Did you know that you can get your name in the newspaper for free? Newspapers are always searching for interesting information on businesses, and every one of you has a story worth telling. What many small business owners don't realize is that most news content is really driven by corporate publicists. Even if you can't afford to hire a PR pro, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of getting your name in the newspaper for free. One of the easiest ways to get free ink is by sending an editor a press release about a recently completed project, a noteworthy employee, a new product you have to offer or a special event you are hosting. While your job is to promote your business, the editor's job is to provide readers with new and interesting information. Make sure your press release comes across as newsworthy or it will go straight to the advertising sales rep!To avoid hitting the editor's trash bin, make sure that the content is relevant to the publication. For instance, community newspapers are looking for stories relating to that particular community – don't send them a press release on something that applies to a larger geographic span. And, business editors want to hear about new business trends, so make sure you focus on what's new and interesting that you have to offer. When sending out a press release, keep it short and to the point. Most editors today prefer to receive it by e-mail, and a high quality .jpg image to go along with your information is very beneficial.Once you've submitted your press release, you may not hear anything. When making follow-up calls make sure you have a solid pitch put together; be prepared to answer the editor's questions as to why your story is newsworthy.
